I got my first gift card from freemyapps.com last weekend. I immediately used eight of my new ten dollars to get Final Fantasy Tactics The War of the Lions. I had been eyeing it for a while but $15 seemed like too much for an iPhone game. It just so happened it was on sale in the iTunes store for $7.99 the weekend I got my first gift card from freemyapps. I was pretty happy because I loved Final Fantasy Tactics for the Gameboy. I really like well done turn-based strategy games and I think the Gameboy version was one of my all time favorites, up there with Advance Wars and Fire Emblem games.
Before my initial review of this game, some very brief thoughts on the other Final Fantasy games I have for the iPhone:
Final Fantasy - Old school. Classic. I played through it just because I wanted to play the original Final Fantasy and had not before. Simple story and play. It was a more fun than I thought it would be.
Final Fantasy II - I tried. I didn't get through this one the whole way yet. A little different mechanics than the first, but I haven't played it enough to say which style I like better, I am leaning towards the first. It seemed to make more sense. Graphics are a little better and the story seems more fleshed out.

Vanguard Storm - Really simple idea and mechanics. Like a more basic tower defense, but you can move your towers each round. When the monsters start coming in large groups it requires more and more thought on where to move which of your units because they have different range, direction and power. Pretty fun.
Crystal Defenders - WTF?!? Why is this so hard. I like tower defense. I like this game. I like the characters. I like the monsters. But either I suck, or this game is super hard. I would probably love this game if it were just a little easier. Only try this one if you want a challenge.
Chaos Rings - Pretty awesome. Would be really rad on a bigger screen. I like it even though it is a little more complicated than most of the games I usually play.

And now for War of the Lions... I have only played it for an hour or so since downloading it. So far I don't know if it holds up the the DS Final Fantasy Tactics. Not what I expected in that it is not as cartoony as I thought. I don't know if thats good or bad yet. The gameplay seems to be spot on so far. I am going to give it a few more hours and then put up a post with some updated thoughts later on.
I think I will like it, but even if I end up not liking it I can't complain too much because it was free. If you are going to try freemyapps, please use this link, and we will both get some bonus points.
